We’ve put together some tips to help you become a power user of Google Maps.
In 2016, Google decided to turn its billion plus users editors. It has been introducing a line-up of features since that allows users to share location information, add images and become ‘local guides’. Here are some Google Maps features you will love.
One-Handed Zoom
Goodbye pinch. The new way to interact with maps involves a simple double-tap of the screen, keeping the finger on it and then swiping to explore.
Save Maps Offline
If you want to reduce your data bills but still benefit from map usage, just save them for offline use and access later under You Places. On Android simply tap mic and say ‘Ok Maps’ and on Apple iOS tap the three dot menu on top right corner and tap Save Offline Map.
Send Directions to Any Mobile Device
You can ping over directions you’ve looked up on a laptop to a phone or tablet using the Send to device option, just as long as you’re signed into your Google account on all devices. Enable the option in iOS via Google Maps > Settings > Notifications > Sent from desktop maps.
Find Nearby Places
Zoom in on the location you are headed to, tap Explore at the bottom of your screen and you can find nearby places to eat, ATMs, pharmacies, gas stations and groceries. Users can add ratings and filter by reviews – another reason why you need to manage online reputation closely.
Likewise when users search for hotels, motels or places to stay, nearby properties are shown along with ratings and rates.
Change Your View
Don’t like how the map view looks? Change it to satellite or terrain view by tapping the icon on top right (above the compass)
Get Orientated
It’s easy to lose orientation in a new place. Google Maps’ compass view gives you correct direction.
Public Transport and Cycling Routes
Enrich standard and satellite maps by adding layers from the menu. There’s Cycling, Terrain, Public Transport and Traffic – the latter two have real-time information, such as red lines warning of heavy traffic or upcoming departures and arrivals for bus, train and tube stops (and the routes serving them). To view the last trains and buses, tap the train icon, load the route, then tap Settings > Last > Done.
Voice Search
The future of search is here, used effortlessly on Google Maps. Search by speaking place names in Android, via Siri in iOS on an iPhone or using your PC microphone. Voice commands can easily be used when getting driving instructions using the Maps app.
Map Extraordinaire
Google Maps is the perfect route planner. Feed in your destination and let Google plot its route. Once the route has loaded, tap the three dots menu on top right for your options, which include alternate routes, free routes, reminder to leave, sharing route and traffic. You can even find parking through Google Maps, as well as rides like Uber when needed.
Create a Custom Map
Share your destination knowledge by creating custom maps within Google. There is a comprehensive set of tools available for creating your own maps, marking routes, points of interest, directions, and more. Perfect to share with your guests!
Become a Google Local Guide
Contribute to the Google Maps by becoming a Local Guides and you can earn rewards. Plus your guests will know you as the destination expert – providing the quintessential authentic experience modern travellers seek.
